Common Plumbing Questions, Answered

Straight answers to the questions Treasure Coast homeowners ask us most — from water heaters and hard water to flat-rate pricing and backflow testing.

Plumbing questions tend to come up at the worst moments — when the water heater is cold at 6 a.m., or when you notice a suspicious wet spot under the sink. Here are honest, detailed answers to the questions we hear most from homeowners on the Treasure Coast.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

The short answer: if your heater is under 8 years old and the problem is a failed element, thermostat, or pressure-relief valve, a repair usually makes sense. If it’s 10–12 years or older, constantly running out of hot water, making loud popping or rumbling noises, or showing rust and moisture around the base, replacement is almost always the smarter investment.

We are factory warranty service specialists for Rheem, GE, Ruud, and Bradford White — meaning we can honor manufacturer warranties, carry the right parts, and install these units to their exact specs. If you bought a unit through us, it also comes backed by our one-year parts and labor guarantee, so you’re covered either way.

Why is my water pressure low?

Low pressure in a Florida home usually comes down to one of a few culprits:

  • Mineral buildup — South Florida’s hard water leaves scale inside pipes, faucet aerators, and showerheads, gradually strangling the flow.
  • A partially closed shut-off valve — The main valve or a branch valve may never have been fully reopened after a repair.
  • A failing pressure-reducing valve (PRV) — Most homes have one where the main line enters the house. They typically last 10–15 years.
  • A small leak in the supply line — A pinhole or slab leak bleeds pressure before the water ever reaches your fixtures.

If you’ve noticed pressure dropping gradually over time, scale is the most likely cause. If it dropped suddenly, call us — a slab leak or broken PRV needs prompt attention.

Why does Florida hard water matter?

The Treasure Coast’s water is among the hardest in the country. High mineral content (primarily calcium and magnesium) affects your home in several real ways:

  • Water heaters accumulate sediment faster, losing efficiency and shortening their lifespan.
  • Pipes and fixtures build up scale that reduces flow and eventually causes failures.
  • Skin and hair feel dry; soaps and shampoos don’t lather as well.
  • Appliances like dishwashers and washing machines wear out sooner.

A properly sized water softener — we install and service North Star softeners — removes those minerals before they enter your plumbing system. The payback in extended appliance life and lower energy bills is real and measurable.

What is backflow testing, and do I need it?

Backflow is what happens when water flows backward through your pipes into the public supply — typically caused by a pressure drop on the municipal side. It’s a public-health issue because household water can carry chemicals, fertilizers, or contaminants back into the drinking water system.

Florida law requires annual backflow preventer testing for most residential irrigation systems and for many commercial properties. The test is quick and non-invasive: a certified tester attaches gauges to your backflow device, checks that the internal valves hold under pressure, and issues a compliance report you submit to the water utility.

We are backflow certified (FL Lic. CFC027632) and can perform testing, repair failing devices, and file the required documentation with your utility.

Do you really charge a flat rate?

Yes — and it’s not a gimmick. Flat-rate pricing means you know the full cost of the job before we start. We quote the price, you approve it, and that’s what you pay — regardless of how long the work takes. There’s no “time and materials” surprise when a job takes longer than expected.

This model works because it aligns our incentives with yours: we want to work efficiently and do it right the first time, because we don’t get paid more for taking longer.

Are your technicians background-checked?

Every technician we send to your home is drug-tested and background-checked. We’ve operated this way since we opened our doors in 1983. When you let someone into your home, you should know exactly who they are. We take that seriously.

How long have you been in business?

Plumbing by Bishop has served the Treasure Coast since 1983 — over four decades of local work. That’s not a marketing line; it means we’ve seen nearly every plumbing situation a Florida home can produce, we know local soil and water conditions, and we’re here when you need us long after the job is done.
